Hermann was an Ormus Inquisitor under the command of Chief Inquisitor Margulis. He was also Richard’s personal retainer, as his family had been in service to Richard’s family since they were aboard the Immigrant Fleet.

Hermann was originally a private first-class in the Galaxy Federation Navy and was a member of Captain Matthews’ detachment on the Elsa von Brabant. After that, he became CEO of Hayes Porter Services, a dummy corporation belonging to the U-TIC organization. He finally became an Ormus Inquisitor along with Richard.

In Xenosaga I&II DS, Hermann first appeared, along with Richard, during an attack on the Durandal; this is the only time they are seen without their mechs. In the PS2 series, Hermann was first seen, along with Richard, during Episode II. They were ordered to recapture M.O.M.O. on Second Miltia, but they failed. Next, they were ordered to defend the Ormus Stronghold, but they failed once again. Hermann also appeared in Labyrinthos, where he helped Margulis escape. Hermann’s and Richard’s next appearance was in Episode III. Pellegri ordered them to hold off the Federation fleet which was moving towards Rennes-le-Château. Their final mission was to stop Shion and co. on Michtam, where Hermann and Richard were ultimately killed.

In Episode II, Hermann piloted the A.M.W.S. Scutum, named after an ancient Roman shield. In Xenosaga I&II DS, it is revealed that the Scutum was “borrowing” a Vessel of Anima from a U-TIC mech, the E.S. Joseph. Therefore, the mech is neither an A.M.W.S. nor an E.S. and is given the name “P.S. Joseph”. For a weapon, he preferred to use a staff.

Hermann was a very quiet and stoic person. He talked very little and was happy to simply serve Richard and Ormus.
