Matthews is the captain of the Elsa. An ex-Marine himself, he empathizes with Chereknov when the U-TIC soldier creates a cover story about being a Marine.

Constantly in debt to the Kukai Foundation, it appears that the Elsa itself had to be put up as collateral. Although Gaignun does not approve of their scavenging activities, Matthews is desperate enough for money that he pursues these interests anyway.

He is a huge fan of the Keltia music duo, the Seraphim Sisters, and hopes to attend one of their concerts in person someday. While these shows are available on the U.M.N., Matthews maintains that being there physically enhances the experience, even if one’s brain interprets the data the exact same way.

Matthews is evidently quite the drinker. One of his hats even proclaims, “CAUTION: I AM BOOZER.” [sic] That the Elsa contains its own bar — which Matthews had installed — heavily indicates that he’s very fond of alcohol.

Regardless of his gruff exterior, it is clear that Matthews truly cares about the well-being of his crewmates, and is a good person at heart. Throughout the games, Matthews continuously volunteers his help to the main characters, even though he may initially show reluctance to do so.
