Nephilim
Article by LadyTwi
Nephilim is a young girl who appears before Shion many times, often giving her advice and warnings, though her words can be quite cryptic. She was once a human, but is now nothing more than a wandering consciousness.
Back in the time of Lost Jerusalem, people discovered that the Zohar would emit an enormous amount of energy if it were exposed to a specific brainwave. During an experiment, the Zohar went out of control and caused the young girl, Nephilim, who was participating, to disappear.
The Song of Nephilim was created by Joachim Mizrahi. It is essentially a giant tuning fork which amplified wavelengths created by Lemegeton (a Zohar control program created by Grimoire Verum that was used in the Zohar experiments during the time of Lost Jerusalem).
Nephilim first appeared before Shion in the Encephalon, during Episode I. Shion ran a simulation battle for KOS-MOS and as she was being pulled out, she saw Nephilim. Next, Shion saw her when she was in the room with the Zohar emulator on the Woglinde. She saw her multiple times after that, like when she was attacked by Gnosis. Nephilim also warned Shion about Andrew Cherenkov’s condition and was there when Shion and company dove into the Encephalon to retrieve KOS-MOS’ battle data. This was the first time people other than Shion could see Nephilim. She helped Shion and Jr. to face their painful pasts and then showed everyone one of the possible futures awaiting them. Finally, at the end of the game, Nephilim helped Shion locate KOS-MOS when they were escaping Proto Merkabah.
In Episode II, Nephilim once again appeared before Shion. She told her to go to Miltia and save Febronia’s sisters. She also appeared after Jr. killed Albedo; she talked with chaos after he found Jr.

In Episode III, it was revealed that Grimoire’s consciousness still wandered the U.M.N., even after all the time that had passed since Earth was lost; he was searching for Nephilim. Later, Nephilim appeared before Shion and told her that Grimoire was eliminated, but the Gnosis still continued to spread because of a certain individual. She also told Shion that she is the key to opening KOS-MOS’ heart. Nephilim then went and talked to chaos about Shion learning the “truth”. Nephilim appeared for a second when the group went to Rennes-La-Château, then appeared again when they were in the past. She warned Shion about Kevin and the painful choice she’ll have to make if she meets him again. When Shion and company went to Michtam and went down into the isolation research facility, Nephilim gave Shion the choice of continuing on or turning back. Finally, after Zarathustra went out of control, Nephilim appeared to draw all the Gnosis into her and dimensionally shift that region of space to Lost Jerusalem.
Origin of the name
There are many different views on what the Nephilim were. Some people say “Nephilim” were the offspring of “sons of God” (angels) and “daughters of men”. In Aramic, “Nephila” referred to the constellation Orion and “Nephilim” referred to Orion’s semi-divine descendants, the Anakim. “Nephilim” was also used to refer to a race of giants or very strong men.
