KOS-MOS’ Etymology

Name: KOS-MOS

Japanese Name: コスモス

Romanization: Kosumosu

Origin: Kosmos is a Greek term meaning “order” or “orderly arrangement” and a secondary meaning of “ornament”. It is the antithesis of chaos. Today it is generally used as a synonym for the Universe (ie, the cosmos). In theology, the term can be used to mean the created, physical Universe. The Septuagint (Koine Greek version of the Hebrew Bible) uses the term to mean the inhabited world, and it is used synonymously with “aion” to refer to the present world in Christian theology.

In addition, Cosmos is a genus of flowering plants in the Asteraceae (daisy) family. Cosmos are native to southern North America, Central America, and northern South America.

Significance: KOS-MOS is a weapon designed to bring order to the universe by eliminating the gnosis. She is also the host of Animus, the opposite of chaos’ Anima. Anima’s function is the failsafe of the universe, a power of destruction, whereas Animus’ function is to control Anima. In other words, to prevent it from being used.

Significance (2):Like most prominant female characters in Xenosaga, KOS-MOS is named after the flower Cosmos. Cosmos symbolize modesty, peace, and beauty.

Additional: KOS-MOS’ name is almost always written with letters from the Latin alphabet, even in the Japanese versions. In game, KOS-MOS is a recursive acronym for “Kosmos Obey Strategical Multiple Operation Systems”. It is always written in capital letters, in contrast with chaos’ lowercase.

The Tatarian Aster, the flower Shion is named after, is also in the Asteraceae family.
